Louisiana Iris are native to America. They are beautiful and versatile, lasting for many years with simple care. They are wonderful in the pond or water garden, but do not require pond culture. They continue to grow and produce flowers over and over again every year. The different colors are fun to collect and are a mainstay in aquatic gardening. Folks ask us all the time if you can pot regular Iris and put it into your pond.... sadly, no. Although you CAN choose to plant Louisiana Iris in somewhat dryer areas around a pond, in containers or even in raised beds.
Even when Louisiana Iris are not in bloom, they still have an attractive look. Shown here is a simple 1 gal pot of Clyde Redmond Iris potted in lava rock without soil, set into a pond. This particular Louisiana Iris thrived feeding just off of fish waste.
This photo to the right was taken in September. Six months later the above photo shows more than double the growth & lots of blooms.
You can never really go wrong with Louisiana Iris. Trim with knife or scissors. Plants can be easily split after their bloom cycle is over.
Louisiana Iris are very adaptable plants. They are a great choice for muddy areas on your property, the edge of a lake or natural pond, and will self-naturilize if allowed to do so over time. Soon, you will have plenty to trade with your friends.

A different 'pond-friendly' iris is the Japanese Iris. Shown below is just one cultivar among many. Japanese Irises have very large and dramatic blooms, and of course are equally fun to collect and trade.
